Dr. Philip Teal

Dr. Teal received his BMeSc and MD degree from the University of Alberta.  He did his neurology training at the University of British Columbia and completed a post-graduate Fellowship in Stroke and Vascular Neurology at Tufts University, Boston.  Dr. Teal is a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada qualified in the specialties of both Neurology and Emergency Medicine.

Dr. Teal holds the Sauder Family and Heart and Stroke Foundation Professorship in Clinical Stroke Neurology and is a Clinical Professor of Neurology at the University of British Columbia.

Dr. Teal is the founding member and director of the Vancouver Stroke Program at Vancouver General Hospital.  Dr. Teal established the acute stroke program, the Stroke Prevention Clinic, and clinical trials research program.

Dr. Teal has received recognitions and awards for clinical excellence and teaching including the Master Teacher Award from the Department of Medicine UBC, the coveted PAR-BC Dr. Patricia Clugston Memorial Award for Excellence in Teaching, Recognition for bringing Clinical Renown to Vancouver Coastal Health, Best Role Model/Example of Professionalism, the Fay R Dirks Award for excellence in Teaching, and several others.

Dr. Teal has served on the Board of the Heart and Stroke of British Columbia, and Canada, has served as the Chairman of the Canadian Stroke Consortium, and as a board member of the Vancouver Hospital Foundation.

Dr. Teal is a clinician, teacher, and clinical trialist.  His academic activities have included teaching and lecturing at all levels, participation and co-author of authoritative clinical guidelines, and the design, organization and conduct of clinical research stroke trials.  He is the author of numerous publications in scientific journals.  Dr. Teal has participated in over 75 clinical trials for stroke prevention and acute stroke therapy.

Dr. Teal’s clinical interests are in stroke prevention, acute stroke management and in diagnostic neurology.
